Museum of Martime Tradition and Sponge Fishing of Nea Koutali
The Museum is the result of many years of efforts by the inhabitants of the village of Nea Koutalis to highlight the history of their village.
The Museum of Martime Tradition and Sponge Fishing of Nea Koutali aims to highlight the history of the Koutaliani in their old homeland and the presentation of the sponge-fishing, as Koutalianoi lived and practiced in their new homeland of Lemnos. Three are the thematic units that one can visit the museum: – “The Life of the Koutalians before their uprooting” – “The sponge at Nea Koutali in Limnos” – “The Archaeological Collection” The exhibits are mainly donations and demonstrate the cultural sensitivity of the Koutsanes. By their practice, they initially gave the archaeological objects to the school of his community. They later gave away everything they had in their home as a legacy or a memento. The Museum is the fruit of the many years of efforts of the inhabitants of the village of Nea Koutali, which lasted about forty years, from the 1960s until the opening of the museum in July 2006. The Museum is located in the main square of the village in Nea Koutali Limnos, a few kilometers from the airport. Nea Koutali is just 23 km from Myrina, the capital of the island.
